Smithsonian Rejects White House Demand for External Content Audit

Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III rejected White House demands for an external audit of museum exhibits, asserting the institution's independence from political interference.

The Smithsonian Institution is resisting efforts by the Trump administration to remove what the White House describes as divisive, race-centered ideology from its exhibits. Following a March executive order directing Vice President J.D. Vance and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to eliminate improper ideology from federal parks and museums, the administration demanded curatorial materials and announced plans to audit eight Smithsonian museums to promote American exceptionalism.

Secretary Lonnie Bunch III rejected the demand for an external review in a September 3 letter, asserting that the institution's independence is paramount. Bunch established an in-house team to conduct an internal review of content to ensure it remains nonpartisan and factual, with findings expected by the end of the year. While he intends to brief the White House, he stated the Smithsonian will not submit a formal report.

White House official Lindsey Halligan countered that the Smithsonian cannot credibly audit itself because approximately 70% of its funding comes from taxpayers, declaring an impartial audit non-negotiable. This conflict has drawn political intervention, with Senator Alex Padilla and three other Democrats urging the Smithsonian to resist bullying by the executive branch. The American Historical Association also urged the administration to respect the expertise of museum professionals, warning that political interference risks the integrity of historical interpretation.
