India and Bangladesh Negotiate Visit by Tarique Rahman

India and Bangladesh are negotiating a bilateral visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to New Delhi, potentially scheduled for late August or the first week of September 2026. The proposed visit aims to normalize diplomatic relations, renew the Ganga waters treaty, and finalize energy deals. A primary objective is the removal of trade restrictions on Bangladesh's food processing and textile sectors that India imposed in May 2025.

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi described recent meetings with Rahman as fruitful and confirmed that an invitation remains open. However, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam clarified that no dates have been finalized because the Prime Minister is currently occupied with domestic issues.

Diplomatic efforts occur amid tensions following a virtual press conference held by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2026. The Bangladeshi government labeled the event an affront to its national sovereignty. In response, the Ministry of External Affairs of India distanced itself from the press conference, stating it does not endorse remarks directed against the current Bangladeshi government.
