North Carolina Investigates 1,599 Potential Non-Citizen Voters

The North Carolina State Board of Elections is investigating 1,599 potential non-U.S. citizens on state voter rolls. The investigation follows the release of data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program.

These findings align with a July 16 national address by President Donald Trump, who claimed that more than 250,000 foreigners are illegally registered to vote across the United States. Executive Director Sam Hayes noted that the affected cases represent an extremely small percentage of the state's 7.8 million registered voters.

Hayes stated that the board is developing a process to cross-reference state and county records with other sources to verify eligibility. He affirmed that the agency will investigate every case and ensure all registrants receive due process before any removal proceedings are initiated.
