Canadian Premiers Reject Elon Musk's Call for Secession

Alberta and Saskatchewan premiers rejected Elon Musk's suggestion that they secede from Canada, while Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the comments as foreign interference.

Premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan rejected a suggestion from Elon Musk that their provinces should secede from Canada. Musk, a tech businessman and former adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, posted on his platform X that Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Quebec would be better off as independent nations.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe responded to the suggestion with a single word: "No." While Moe identifies as a true Canadian, he stated he would not block a public vote on separation if residents petitioned for a plebiscite. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also expressed strong disagreement with Musk and stated she intends to vote to stay in Canada during an upcoming provincial vote on October 19, which will determine if the province remains in Canada or holds a second binding referendum on separation.

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by asserting that Canada's future will be decided by Canadians. Carney stated the country must remain free from the interference of foreign governments and large tech firms that believe they can dictate Canadian affairs.

Musk's comments followed statements by Quebec premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, who claimed Quebec's independence will be realized one day. The sovereigntist Parti Québécois has recently returned to power in Quebec, with Plamondon vowing to hold a referendum.
