Democrats Plan DHS Probe After Midterm Congressional Victories
Democrats intend to investigate the Department of Homeland Security for alleged abuses following midterm wins that granted them control of both houses of Congress.
Democratic lawmakers are preparing to challenge the immigration policies of Donald Trump after securing control of both houses of Congress in the midterm elections. The new congressional majority intends to use oversight powers to investigate the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement for alleged corruption and abuses.
Representative Robert Garcia, the incoming chair of the House Oversight Committee, and Representative Bennie Thompson plan to hold the administration accountable for its actions. Other members, including Senator-elect James Talarico and Representative Gabe Vasquez, are advocating for comprehensive immigration reform and the creation of new pathways to legal status.
The administration has responded by reinforcing its hard-line stance. President Trump promoted Stephen Miller, the architect of his immigration agenda, to chief of staff. While the president expressed a willingness to work with Democrats, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that deportations will continue. Republicans have already allocated 150 billion dollars to expand the border wall and increase detention capacity.
