Trump Pledges Canada Trade Deal Amid Election Interference Claims

President Donald Trump pledged to resolve the Canada trade dispute while U.S. officials simultaneously accused Canada of interfering in upcoming midterm elections.

President Donald Trump pledged to resolve the ongoing trade dispute with Canada soon, claiming during a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, that Canada is willing to give the U.S. anything. This follows a period of intensified tensions since trade talks collapsed in August, leading to mutual tariffs. Trump recently signed an order to remove 50 percent tariffs on specific Canadian agricultural and forestry products, though he simultaneously added other products to the tariff list.

Despite this optimistic tone, U.S. officials have launched sharp accusations against Ottawa. U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra and trade adviser Peter Navarro accused Canadian officials of interfering in U.S. midterm elections, specifically in Maine and Michigan. Navarro warned that Canada would pay even more dearly if it continued to interfere in those races.

While Trump praised Canada's recent conduct at a rally in South Carolina, the diplomatic environment remains volatile. In Montreal, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Canadian officials to strengthen the alliance between Canada and the European Union, seeking the closest partnership the bloc has ever had with a non-European country. This move toward European alignment previously led Trump to suggest such arrangements could be viewed as a hostile act.

Economically, the dispute has caused significant friction. Tariffs have cost Michigan US$23-billion since early 2025 and damaged tourism in Maine. While some analysts believe the midterm elections may incentivize a deal to protect U.S. businesses, others suggest protectionist policies may persist regardless of the election outcome.
