US Sanctions International Criminal Court Amid Global Backlash

The United States imposed sanctions to cripple the International Criminal Court, prompting the Netherlands and several G7 allies to pledge protection for the tribunal.

The United States has imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), targeting the tribunal's infrastructure, operations, and assets within the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the measures aim to cripple the court's ability to operate, giving U.S.-based entities six months to wind down transactions. The move follows U.S. criticism of ICC arrest warrants for Israeli officials and investigations into U.S. military conduct in Afghanistan.

In response, the Dutch parliament approved a motion calling on its government to protect the ICC from these sanctions. The motion urges cooperation with the Dutch and European Central Banks to ensure the court maintains access to international payment systems, potentially by routing payments through a public financial institution to bypass U.S. pressure.

International reaction has been sharply critical. Foreign ministers from Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement expressing unwavering support for the ICC's independence. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the sanctions as a serious blow to international criminal justice, while the ICC characterized the action as an assault on the rule of law.
