Trump Launches Ranchers First Initiative Amid Beef Import Backlash

President Donald Trump and the United States Department of Agriculture launched the Ranchers First Initiative on August 31, 2026, to rebuild the U.S. cattle herd, which has fallen to a 75-year low. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the program includes the BRAND endorsement to insure heifer retention for breeding, guaranteed loans for small meat processors, and expanded grazing access on conserved lands following natural disasters. To further challenge the market dominance of the "big four" meatpackers—Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS, and National Beef—Trump is authorizing legal measures to allow ranchers to process and sell their own meat. This coincides with a Department of Justice antitrust probe into the industry. Meanwhile, Secretary Rollins is managing a New World screwworm outbreak in Texas, where the USDA is constructing a $750 million sterile fly facility amid allegations from Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller that the agency's response was delayed.
