Donald Trump Criticizes Supreme Court Over Tariff and Citizenship Rulings

President Donald Trump criticized the Supreme Court of the United States on Saturday, claiming the justices made "faulty, political, and ridiculous decisions" regarding tariffs and birthright citizenship. Trump asserted that these rulings have cost the United States trillions of dollars and permanently damaged the citizenship process.

The criticism follows two major judicial setbacks for the administration. In February, the court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not grant the president authority to impose sweeping import duties. This decision led to approximately $100 billion in refunds to importers by August. In June, the court upheld a broad interpretation of the 14th Amendment, rejecting Trump's efforts to restrict birthright citizenship for children of parents unlawfully or temporarily present in the U.S.

While the administration has attempted to bypass these constraints using Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 for tariffs and new executive orders to combat "birth tourism," judicial hurdles persist. U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman previously blocked an administration order seeking to restrict birthright citizenship, stating that the president must follow the court's determination that children in the certified class are "citizens at birth."
