Trump Tariffs Drive U.S. Trade Deficit to 17-Year Low

President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs that reduced the U.S. trade deficit to $29.4 billion in October, the lowest level since 2009.

The United States trade deficit fell to $29.4 billion in October, marking the lowest level since June 2009. This figure represents a 39% decrease from the $48.1 billion gap recorded in September and a sharp decline from a $136 billion deficit in March 2025. However, data shows the deficit rose again to $54.5 billion by January.

Donald Trump drove this shift by implementing sweeping tariffs intended to curb imports and increase exports. After the Supreme Court of the United States struck down his original tariffs, Trump imposed new 10% levies under a different law and has expressed intent to raise those rates to 15%.

Public and economic reactions to the policy are mixed. While government data suggests the deficit is narrowing, a February Harris Poll indicated that 70% of Americans believe the tariffs have increased consumer prices.
