U.S. Forces Strike Containership Breaking Iranian Port Blockade

U.S. military forces fired a missile at the Panama-flagged Vela Nova for attempting to break a naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Gulf of Oman.

The United States military fired a missile at the rudder of the Vela Nova, a Panama-flagged containership, early Tuesday morning in the Gulf of Oman. The strike occurred approximately 71 nautical miles from the coast of Pakistan after the crew ignored warnings from American personnel while attempting to break a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

A military helicopter executed the strike, which ignited a fire that was later extinguished. All 17 crew members were accounted for, and there were no immediate reports of casualties. Following the attack, the vessel appeared to attempt a crew transfer to another civilian ship.

This enforcement action is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to apply economic pressure on Iran to end the war. The incident follows a previous operation in June that resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors.
