U.S. Forces Disable Cargo Ship to Enforce Iran Blockade

U.S. Navy forces disabled the Panama-flagged cargo vessel M/V Vela Nova on August 11, 2026, after the ship attempted to breach a naval blockade of Iranian ports. An MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the vessel's engine room and steering gear in the Gulf of Oman, approximately 71 nautical miles from the coast of Pakistan, after the crew ignored repeated warnings. The strike caused a fire that was later extinguished; all 17 crew members were accounted for with no reported casualties.

Donald Trump stated the blockade is intended to choke the Iranian economy and asserted that the United States maintains total control over the Strait of Hormuz. This incident is the third vessel forcibly halted since the U.S. reimposed the blockade on July 14. United States Central Command reported that as of August 11, forces have redirected 55 commercial vessels, disabled three, and boarded two others.

The military action occurs amid a broader conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran that began in February.
