Australia Signs Fiji Defense Pact and Pursues India Uranium Deal

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a mutual defense alliance with Fiji and is negotiating security pacts in the Solomon Islands and a uranium deal with India.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed two landmark treaties with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Suva on July 6, 2026. The Ocean of Peace Alliance establishes a mutual defense obligation, making Fiji Australia's fourth formal ally and committing both nations to aid each other during armed attacks in the Pacific. Accompanying this is the Vuvale Union, an economic and security treaty backed by a 1 billion Australian dollar commitment over the next decade for climate, health, and infrastructure initiatives.

These agreements coincide with a Chinese submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific. While China described the launch as routine training, Albanese called it "provocative" and Foreign Minister Penny Wong termed it "destabilising." China's foreign ministry warned Australia against geopolitical rivalry and harming third-party interests. Rabuka maintained that the alliance does not threaten Fiji's relationship with China, stating, "your enemies are not necessarily my enemies."

Following the Fiji signing, Albanese traveled to Honiara in the Solomon Islands on July 7 to celebrate Independence Day and negotiate a comprehensive security treaty with Prime Minister Matthew Wale. Albanese announced a 10.2 million dollar education package and a memorandum of understanding for the Honiara police academy. Wale emphasized the need for a regional platform to share intelligence and allow Pacific nations to speak with a unified voice.

Albanese will conclude his diplomatic tour in Melbourne for an annual summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from July 8-10. The leaders intend to finalize a long-awaited agreement for Australia to export uranium to India and advance cooperation in critical minerals, cybersecurity, and clean energy.
