Polls Show Declining American Exceptionalism Ahead of 250th Anniversary

New surveys reveal a decline in belief in the American Dream and national exceptionalism as President Donald Trump organizes the country's 250th anniversary celebrations.

Recent polling indicates a significant decline in national pride and belief in exceptionalism as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary. A survey by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that only 25% of adults believe the U.S. stands above all other countries, while 30% view other nations as superior. Furthermore, 51% of adults believe the American Dream no longer holds true, with a sharp partisan divide: 57% of Republicans believe it remains intact compared to just 17% of Democrats.

Generational fractures are prominent, with adults under 30 showing the highest levels of skepticism regarding national identity and the American Dream. Separate data from the Elon University Poll indicates that while Generation Z is optimistic about future living standards, they feel less attachment to the U.S. as an institution than Baby Boomers. Sixty-nine percent of Elon University respondents believe the signers of the Declaration of Independence would feel disappointment in modern American democracy.

Amidst this sentiment, President Donald Trump is organizing the anniversary festivities, including the Great American State Fair. The celebrations have faced controversy, leading more than half of scheduled concert acts to withdraw due to the event's political character. In response, President Trump announced he will personally headline the opening ceremony, which will feature cage fighting on the White House south lawn. The AP-NORC poll also recorded a 33% approval rating for the president, with 70% of respondents disapproving of his economic management.
