Mark Carney Government Plans Phased Canada Tax Code Reform

The government of Mark Carney is planning a phased reform of Canada's tax code, with a primary focus on providing relief for small businesses in the upcoming fall budget. Secretary of State for the Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions Wayne Long stated that Ottawa intends to tackle the overhaul "one bite at a time" to stimulate growth and attract international investment following a campaign of U.S. tariffs.

To date, the Liberal government has implemented immediate tax write-offs for new equipment and reduced the lowest income tax bracket. However, critics dismiss these as minor adjustments. Conservative finance critic Michael Chong described the current system as "arcane" and argued that it is "strangling our economy," calling for the creation of a dedicated task force to modernize the code.

Dan Kelly of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business expressed cautious optimism regarding the government's direction. He warned that entrepreneurs will ultimately judge whether the government is serious about reform based on the specific deliverables presented in the final budget.
