Robert Garcia Wins Reelection to Lead House Oversight Committee
U.S. Representative Robert Garcia won reelection to a third term in California, securing the chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee.
U.S. Representative Robert Garcia won reelection to a third term in California’s 42nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Brian Burley with 62 percent of the vote. The victory occurred despite a redrawn congressional map that incorporated the conservative city of Huntington Beach into the district.
As Democrats secure control of the House, Garcia will assume the chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee. In this capacity, he intends to scrutinize the administration of President Donald Trump. Garcia previously served as the mayor of Long Beach and is a gay immigrant born in Peru.
His prior oversight work includes investigations into corruption and the Epstein Files. He also focused on the treatment of Andry Hernández Romero, a Venezuelan asylum-seeker who was sent to a prison in El Salvador, a case for which Garcia sought answers from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
