Family Appeals to UN for Iranian Twins Facing Execution

The family of 21-year-old twins Taraneh and Romina Rahimi has appealed to the United Nations for intervention after the sisters received severe sentences following their arrest by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The twins were detained eight months ago for participating in protests in Isfahan on January 8 and 9. In August, Taraneh was sentenced to death on charges of moharebeh, or waging war against God, while Romina was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Masoud Nourmohammadi, the twins' cousin, submitted the formal request to the UN with support from British human rights lawyers. The appeal cites the use of torture, isolation, and the denial of medical care at Dowlatabad prison, noting that Taraneh requires surgery for injuries sustained during her interrogation.

This legal battle occurs during a period of intensified state violence in Iran, which has executed more than 500 people this year, including at least 16 women. While the family seeks international help to ensure a fair process and medical access, President Masoud Pezeshkian recently stated at the UN General Assembly that Iran is ready for dialogue and diplomacy.
