Rahul Gandhi Demands Amit Shah Resign Over Student Protests

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah following police action against students protesting the NEET-UG paper leak on July 20. Gandhi asserted that Shah is either "culpable or incompetent" because the Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force report directly to the Home Ministry. He characterized Shah's failure to address Parliament regarding the violence at Jantar Mantar as an "approval of the violence" and called for a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the use of pellet guns, tear gas, and nail-studded lathis.

On August 10, Congress MP K C Venugopal escalated the demand by writing to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Venugopal urged the Speaker to compel Shah to make a formal statement, arguing that the Home Minister has a constitutional obligation to be answerable to the legislature for the actions of the Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to the opposition's demands by stating that the government, rather than the opposition, determines which minister delivers statements in the House. The dispute has led to legislative deadlocks in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
