Bosnia and World Leaders Mark 31st Srebrenica Genocide Anniversary
Bosnia and Herzegovina and international leaders commemorated the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide by burying 10 newly identified victims and condemning rising genocide denial.
Thousands of mourners and foreign dignitaries gathered at the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Center on July 11, 2026, to mark the 31st anniversary of the 1995 massacre. The event centered on the burial of 10 newly identified victims, whose remains were transported from Visoko through Sarajevo. These interments brought the total number of victims buried at the cemetery to 6,782, though the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to search for approximately 900 to 1,000 missing individuals.
Denis Bećirović, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan led commemorations that condemned genocide denial and historical revisionism. Bećirović described the denial of the genocide as an anti-civilisational act, while Erdoğan called the massacre one of the most brutal genocides in history. The events coincided with the second observance of the UN's International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.
Survivors working at the Srebrenica Memorial Centre warned that younger generations are increasingly exposed to false narratives that portray victims as soldiers or deny the crime entirely. International figures, including London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Dutch Ambassador Henk van den Dool, urged the global community to combat dehumanization through education. In Ankara, the Turkish Foreign Ministry held a separate ceremony on July 13, reaffirming support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
