House Republicans Adjourn Amid Affordability Struggles and Iran War Fractures

The United States House of Representatives adjourned for a seven-week pre-midterm recess on Wednesday following a series of legislative clashes over the cost of living and the conflict in Iran. Before departing, the House passed the Ratepayer Protection Act in a 417-3 bipartisan vote to prevent AI data center expansion from increasing utility bills. However, the United States Senate blocked the measure on Thursday, stalling the GOP's primary affordability win.

Internal party fractures emerged as other Republican efforts failed, including a push by Representative Andy Harris to suspend the federal gas tax. Economic anxiety led seven Republicans to break party ranks and vote for a Democratic resolution to limit President Donald Trump's authority in the Iran war, citing record fuel prices. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks stated she would not vote to keep soldiers in an open-ended war while constituents paid too much at the pump.

Speaker Mike Johnson defended the GOP as the ideas party, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries argued that more clearly needs to be done. Despite the bipartisan success of the Ratepayer Protection Act in the House, some GOP members warned that economic headwinds and the ongoing war could lead to significant losses in the upcoming November elections.
