Nigerian House Rejects Motion to Summon President Tinubu

The House of Representatives declined a motion to summon President Bola Tinubu over 2025 budget implementation, citing that ministers are the appropriate officials to answer inquiries.

The Nigerian House of Representatives rejected a motion to summon President Bola Tinubu to account for the poor implementation of the 2025 national budget and delays in constituency projects. During a rowdy plenary session, Representative Alex Mascot Ikwechegh moved the motion, but Speaker Tajudeen Abbas ruled against it, stating the proposal was a complete deviation from the approved text.

Following the session, Deputy Spokesperson Philip Agbese clarified that the President's presence is unnecessary to resolve budget-related issues. Agbese argued that responsibility for budget execution rests with the relevant ministers, heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation. He described these officials as the appropriate figures for parliamentary inquiries regarding the Appropriation Act.

Agbese further defended Speaker Abbas's leadership during the proceedings, praising his commitment to the integrity of the House. Additionally, Agbese dismissed calls to cancel the National Assembly Open Week scheduled for July 14, asserting that the flagship initiative is essential for showcasing legislative activities to global stakeholders.
