Trump Launches Investigation to Strip Ilhan Omar of Citizenship
President Donald Trump initiated a criminal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar's naturalization process, leading to a federal raid on her home and intense political backlash.
President Donald Trump has initiated a criminal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar with the goal of stripping her of U.S. citizenship. The administration alleges that Omar's father falsified her naturalization form by misstating her age during the filing process. On October 12, agents from the Department of Homeland Security executed a search warrant at Omar's Washington-area home, seizing her phone and other materials.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro recently filed a court request to keep the search warrant sealed, arguing that releasing the documents would imperil an ongoing investigation into fraud, false statements, and conspiracy. This move has drawn challenges from 15 news organizations and Judicial Watch, who argue the public interest outweighs secrecy given that the target is a sitting member of Congress.
Representative Omar has denied the allegations, characterizing the probe as an attempt to weaponize federal law enforcement. More than 170 House Democrats have condemned the action in a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Senior Democrats, including Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal, have vowed to use the power of the purse to defund the investigation and deploy subpoenas to expose the prosecution's processes if they secure a House majority.
