G7 Nations Release 100 Million Barrels to Lower Fuel Prices
G7 nations agreed to release 100 million barrels of emergency oil and diesel to lower fuel prices following pressure from the Trump administration.
The Group of Seven nations and their partners agreed on October 5, 2026, to release up to 100 million barrels of emergency oil and diesel stocks over the next four months. Coordinated by the International Energy Agency, the release specifically targets diesel to alleviate market pressure caused by ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.
Donald Trump drove the agreement through an aggressive pressure campaign, threatening a U.S. diesel export ban to force European nations to tap their reserves before the U.S. midterm elections. While European officials privately described these demands as blackmail, the final deal includes a commitment from G7 members to refrain from energy export restrictions. Following the agreement, Trump ruled out the export ban.
European diesel futures fell more than 8% immediately after the announcement. The coordinated effort follows public calls from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for European partners to accelerate the delivery of fuel reserves to address global disruptions.
