Trump Administration Seeks $8 Billion Penn Station Redesign and Renaming

The Trump administration is urging U.S. Senators to rename New York City's Pennsylvania Station as part of a projected $8 billion redesign aimed at returning the hub to its original classical Beaux Arts style. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy requested federal funding for the project in a letter to Congress on Wednesday. While the letter did not explicitly name a new moniker, Duffy and spokesperson Karoline Leavitt have signaled support for the name Trump Station.

President Donald Trump stated that the idea was suggested by Senator Chuck Schumer, construction union heads, and other politicians rather than himself, arguing that the current name inappropriately references a competing state. Amtrak has been ordered by the administration to lead the redesign, which will preserve Madison Square Garden but demolish a theater on the site.

The proposal has faced sharp criticism from U.S. Representative Jerry Nadler and the Riders Alliance. Opponents have characterized the effort as a vanity project and a hostile takeover of the station, arguing that public funds and transit priorities should focus on improving service and saving time rather than creating monuments.
