Israeli Soldier Dies in Southern Lebanon Humvee Rollover
The Israel Defense Forces reported the death of Captain Eliav Haim Tzaflamos and the wounding of five soldiers in separate accidents in southern Lebanon.
The Israel Defense Forces reported the death of Captain Eliav Haim Tzaflamos, a 21-year-old combat officer in the 603rd Combat Engineering Battalion, following a military Humvee rollover in the Litani River area of southern Lebanon on Thursday. Three other soldiers were lightly wounded in the crash. In a separate operational accident the same day, two additional soldiers were lightly wounded due to the improper handling of ammunition.
Tzaflamos, who was promoted posthumously from lieutenant to captain, is scheduled for burial Friday in Haifa. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed mourning for the officer and prayers for the wounded. Tzaflamos is the 17th Israeli soldier killed since a June ceasefire was established between Israel and Hezbollah.
The casualties occurred while Israeli forces continue to occupy territory in southern Lebanon following a March invasion. This presence persists despite a U.S.-sponsored framework agreement signed June 26 in Washington, which mandates a gradual Israeli withdrawal and the deployment of the Lebanese army. In response to the security situation, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated in Beirut that the European Union favors extending the UN peacekeeping mandate and will launch a training mission for the Lebanese army to prevent a security vacuum.
