Trump Administration Restores Planned Parenthood Title X Grants

The administration of Donald Trump restored Title X family planning grants to Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health organizations effective April 1, 2026. White House spokesperson Kush Desai stated the move followed "significant legal challenges" that prevented the administration from withholding funds that were "locked in place during the Biden presidency.", which were part of a five-year project initiated by the Department of Health and Human Services.

While the Hyde Amendment prevents these federal funds from directly covering abortions, the grants provide reimbursements for birth control and non-abortion services. To prevent future funding of abortion providers, the United States Department of Health and Human Services is developing a draft to reinstate the "Protect Life Rule." Used during Trump's first term and later rescinded, this rule would require Title X-funded projects to neither refer for nor encourage abortion, forcing organizations like Planned Parenthood to either stop providing abortion services or forfeit federal grants.

Pro-life advocates condemned the extension as a betrayal of the GOP base. Marjorie Dannenfelser of SBA Pro-Life America described the decision as an "inexplicable slap in the face," while Lila Rose of Live Action called it a "betrayal of the pro-life Americans." Other critics, including Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life of America, urged the administration to instead enforce the Comstock Act to prohibit the mailing of abortion pills. The administration intends to realign the program with a pro-family agenda in 2027.
