Orthodox Union Warns Tariffs Threaten Kosher Food Supply

The Orthodox Union, the world's largest kosher certification agency, has warned U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick that proposed tariffs on vegetable-based fatty acids could disrupt the kosher food supply chain. The agency argues that because animal-based alternatives are generally not kosher, these duties would increase costs for basic processed foods such as margarine and mayonnaise without increasing domestic supply.

The U.S. Department of Commerce is investigating whether imports from Indonesia and Malaysia unfairly burden the domestic market. This investigation follows a petition by Vantage Specialty Chemicals, which alleges that foreign government-subsidized imports undermine American manufacturing. Preliminary determinations suggest countervailing duties of approximately 16.5% for Indonesian products and at least 4% for Malaysian products, with final rates expected by the end of the year.
