New York City Council Evaluates AI Guardrail Legislation
The New York City Council is hearing testimony from major AI firms to evaluate 10 proposed laws aimed at establishing accountability and safety guardrails.
The New York City Council is conducting a hearing on Monday, October 5, to examine the risks of artificial intelligence and evaluate 10 proposed pieces of legislation. The proposed laws seek to establish guardrails for AI use and create accountability mechanisms for companies that fail to comply with safety standards.
Representatives from Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic are scheduled to testify, alongside former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon. The hearing occurs shortly after President Donald Trump announced the creation of a Super Intelligence Force involving these same technology firms during a White House event.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed concern regarding the city's readiness, stating that New York is "years behind" in understanding the scale and scope of AI development. He urged lawmakers to avoid framing the issue as an "arms race with China."
