Venezuela Blocks Maria Corina Machado From Returning From Exile

Venezuelan authorities blocked opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado from entering the country three times within a 24-hour period on September 22, 2026. Machado, who has been in exile in Panama since December 2025, attempted to return by both air and sea. Her team reports these are the seventh failed efforts to re-enter Venezuela since her exile began.

The attempts occurred as interim President Delcy Rodriguez met with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York City during the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting marked the first encounter between the two leaders since U.S. forces captured former President Nicolas Maduro in January. While Machado previously enjoyed U.S. support, current reports indicate a shift in international dynamics, with the United States now showing a preference for the government of President Rodriguez. U.S. officials have privately urged Machado to postpone her return.

The democratic opposition party Unidad Venezuela condemned the barring of Machado, stating that the safe return of exiles is a fundamental condition for the recovery of democracy. Meanwhile, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino declined to intervene in the dispute, characterizing the situation as a Venezuelan problem.
