North Korea Tests Long-Range Rockets and Rejects Denuclearization

The Government of North Korea test-fired an upgraded 240mm guided multiple rocket launcher system on September 22, according to the Korean Central News Agency. The new system features an autonomous precision guidance system capable of striking targets 100 kilometers away in trajectory flight mode and 115 kilometers away in combined glide mode. Pak Jong-chon, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, oversaw the test and urged the deployment of destructive attack forces along the southern border to maintain military pressure. The increased range potentially extends Pyongyang's reach to U.S. military installations in Pyeongtaek and Osan, as well as key facilities in the Seoul metropolitan area.

Simultaneously, Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui declared that North Korea's nuclear weapons status is irreversible and will remain unchanged for a hundred or a thousand years. Her remarks were a direct response to a trilateral commitment to denuclearization reaffirmed by the United States, Japan, and South Korea.

These developments follow a speech by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the UN General Assembly, where he outlined a vision for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula. While Lee noted that U.S. President Donald Trump expressed a desire for dialogue and plans to meet Kim Jong Un later this year, Choe rejected the idea that confrontation and dialogue could coexist for the DPRK. The military of South Korea confirmed it tracked projectiles fired toward the Yellow Sea and stated it remains prepared to counter provocations in coordination with the United States.
