Democratic Socialists Win Mayoral Races in New York, Seattle, and D.C.

Democratic socialist candidates from the DSA have won mayoral races in New York City and Seattle, while Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic primary in Washington, D.C.

Democratic socialist candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have achieved a series of electoral breakthroughs in major U.S. cities. Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoralty, and Katie Wilson was elected mayor of Seattle in November 2025. Most recently, Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic mayoral primary in Washington, D.C., on June 16, succeeding the business-friendly administration of Muriel Bowser.

These candidates have campaigned on economic populism, focusing on rent caps, subsidized childcare, affordable housing, and public investment. Following her victory, Lewis George has maintained a combative stance toward the Trump administration to protect the autonomy of the capital. President Donald Trump responded to the trend by suggesting the federal government might take back control of Washington, D.C., if a democratic socialist serves as mayor.

The DSA, which now has over 100,000 members, views these victories as a way of building a political bench to eventually reach higher office. This strategy is already expanding, as Mayor Mamdani is now backing democratic socialist candidates in New York's U.S. House primaries, where several establishment-backed Democrats have already been defeated. While Senator Bernie Sanders has rallied for these candidates to expand their national reach, Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters argues these wins indicate a Democratic Party that has shifted too far left, potentially creating a death spiral for the organization.
