Jordan Convenes Emergency Meeting Over Al-Aqsa Mosque Threats

The Government of Jordan is convening an emergency meeting of foreign ministers from the Arab and Islamic world on Wednesday to address an imminent threat of an Israeli takeover of the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem. Jordanian officials warn that government-backed incursions by Jewish religious extremists and the recruitment of a special Temple Mount police unit could spark a global religious conflict.

Tensions escalated following a July 23 event where National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir led more than 2,000 Israelis into the compound to perform rituals. Jordan, which maintains historic custodianship of the site, views these actions as a violation of the status quo.

Beyond the mosque, Jordan expressed alarm over potential mass deportations of Palestinians from the West Bank. The diplomatic crisis is further strained by Israel's decision to halve water supplies to Jordan, a move seen as retaliation for Jordanian criticism of the Gaza war.
