Nigeria Pledges Free and Fair 2027 General Elections
Minister Mohammed Idris affirms the Nigerian government's commitment to credible 2027 elections and defends strategic borrowing for infrastructure during the TRT World Forum.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has pledged to ensure the 2027 general elections are free, fair, and credible. Speaking at the TRT World Forum 2026 in Istanbul, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission while respecting its constitutional independence.
Idris addressed national security concerns, noting that the government is recruiting new personnel and procuring equipment for the Armed Forces to protect the electoral process. He also cautioned against the use of artificial intelligence to create deepfakes and the spread of misinformation, warning that such tactics could undermine public confidence in the upcoming vote.
Beyond electoral matters, Idris defended the government's use of strategic borrowing, characterizing it as a necessary investment in economic growth and critical infrastructure. He argued that borrowing is a common practice for both developed and developing nations to invest in their future.
