UN Warns Sudan Civil War Deprives Generation of Education

United Nations officials warn that the ongoing civil war in Sudan is depriving an entire generation of its future. During an informal Security Council session, Amina Mohammed stated that more than 8 million school-age children are currently out of the classroom. In the Darfur region, nearly three-quarters of schools have been damaged, destroyed, or rendered unusable since the conflict began in April 2023.

The United Nations has documented over 67 attacks on schools and 154 instances of educational facilities being used for military purposes since 2024. The fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has displaced approximately 15 million people and left nearly 33 million in need of humanitarian assistance.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk characterized the situation as a "human rights catastrophe unfolding in real time," citing reports of gang rape and mass killings. The crisis has also spilled across borders, with neighboring Chad hosting 1.4 million refugees, including over 900,000 Sudanese nationals.
