Donald Trump Promises $5,000 Payments to Adults if Republicans Win
President Donald Trump proposed $5,000 payments to adult Americans contingent on Republican congressional victories while issuing smaller direct checks to retirees and healthcare recipients.
President Donald Trump proposed sending a $5,000 check to every adult American if Republican candidates secure majorities in the House and Senate during the November 3 midterm elections. Trump claimed the funds for this unapproved payment, which requires congressional authorization, would be sourced from tariff revenue.
Alongside this proposal, the president issued several immediate direct payments. These include checks of approximately $90 to over 20 million retirees to help with Medicare Part B premiums and $500 payments to roughly one million people insured under the Affordable Care Act.
These financial measures arrive as the cost of living dominates the election cycle. An AP-NORC poll shows 69% of Americans disapprove of the president's economic management, with nearly three in four viewing the economy as poor. Economic pressures include rising energy costs from the war with Iran and increased Obamacare premiums following the end of pandemic-era tax credits.
In a shift in tone, Trump also encouraged his supporters to vote by mail on Saturday and Monday, despite years of characterizing the practice as prone to fraud. Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana criticized the administration's economic messaging, arguing that citizens should not be told to ignore their own financial realities.
