U.S. Evacuates Diplomats as Iran Plots Lethal Attacks

The United States ordered the evacuation of nonessential personnel from Saudi Arabia and reduced staffing at other Middle East embassies following intelligence of advanced Iranian assassination plots.

The United States government has ordered the emergency evacuation of nonessential diplomats and their families from Saudi Arabia and reduced staffing at embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. These measures follow an October 23 memorandum from Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, who warned Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Iranian lethal plotting against U.S. citizens has reached advanced stages in the Middle East, Europe, and potentially within the United States.

While the State Department initially attributed the Saudi Arabia departures to escalating Houthi rebel attacks on civilian airports and infrastructure, officials confirmed that the Iranian threat is a primary factor. U.S. missions across the region have been placed on restricted operating status, and travel advisories for 13 Middle Eastern countries were updated. Security concerns also led to the withdrawal of B-1 bombers from R.A.F. Fairford in England.

President Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of renewed military operations, referencing a potential return to a campaign similar to Operation Epic Fury to compel Iranian cooperation. However, the administration has committed to delaying major strikes until after the November 3 midterm elections to avoid further economic disruption, as Brent crude oil has already exceeded $116 a barrel. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that further escalation would risk the global economy and stated that Iran has unfinished jobs of its own.
