Supreme Court Rulings Reshape November 3 Midterm Election Rules

The Supreme Court of the United States issued several rulings on redistricting and campaign finance that favor Republican interests ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

The Supreme Court of the United States issued a series of rulings that alter redistricting, campaign finance, and voting procedures for the November 3 midterm elections. In a 6-3 decision in Louisiana v. Callais, the court blocked the creation of a second Black and Democratic district in Louisiana. This decision, alongside subsequent emergency rulings, enabled both Louisiana and Alabama to redraw voting maps in ways that benefit Republicans.

On campaign finance, the court removed limits on coordination between political parties and federal candidates and cleared the way for parties to increase spending on television advertising. The Republican Party responded by allocating over $50 million to midterm candidates. Regarding voter identification, the court permitted New Hampshire to limit the use of student IDs for ballots and authorized the Department of Homeland Security to provide citizenship verification databases to states.

The court did reject an effort by Donald Trump to grant the US Postal Service the power to withhold mail ballots. Justice Elena Kagan criticized the court's trajectory, arguing that the rulings undermine the foundations of democracy. Justice Samuel Alito defended the court's decisions against accusations of partisanship.
