MP Manickam Tagore Demands Inquiry Into Jantar Mantar Police Action

Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha on August 6, 2026, demanding an immediate parliamentary discussion regarding police conduct during a July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Tagore is seeking a comprehensive statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah concerning the deployment of lathi charges, pellet guns, tear gas, and water cannons against protesters, which included women and students.

The motion calls for a transparent examination to determine if the force used complied with constitutional safeguards and requests the establishment of an independent, time-bound judicial inquiry to ensure accountability. Tagore further urged the government to withdraw First Information Reports filed against students involved in the demonstration.

Tagore questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi would offer an apology if the inquiry finds that unjustified force was used against peaceful protesters. He emphasized the need for a fair process to address the proportionality of the police response.
