U.S. Agencies Warn of AI-Driven Attacks on Siemens Controllers
U.S. government agencies issued a cybersecurity advisory warning that hackers are using AI to target Siemens controllers used in critical infrastructure.
The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency, alongside the National Security Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigations, U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office, and United States Environmental Protection Agency, issued a joint advisory warning of hacking attempts against Siemens S7 Series programmable logic controllers. These devices are essential for operating critical infrastructure across the energy, manufacturing, food, agriculture, and water sectors.
Federal officials report that unidentified hackers are utilizing artificial intelligence to accelerate exploit development and lower the technical barrier for executing these attacks. The warning follows a series of at least 30 cyber incidents targeting water systems in Minnesota on July 26 and 27, with similar attacks reported in other states.
While cybersecurity experts suspect Iranian involvement in the breaches, federal officials have not formally attributed the attacks to Iran. President Donald Trump stated on July 31 that he does not believe Iran was responsible, instead attributing the incidents to Minnesota.
