G100 Schedules Opposition Summit to Challenge Bola Tinubu in 2027

The G100, a coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians, has scheduled a Summit of Opposition Parties for August 18, 2026, in Abuja. The summit aims to finalize a grand alliance to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election by implementing a "Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition."

Facilitated by G100 leader Salihu Lukman, the group has completed initial consultations with leaders from six opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party. Key figures involved in these discussions include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. The coalition seeks to build consensus around a single presidential candidate to avoid the vote splitting that occurred during the 2023 elections.

Pro-government critics have dismissed the effort. Abdulmalik Jibril, chairman of the Renewed Hope Project 2027, characterized the proposed alliance as an "exercise in futility," arguing that the administration's performance will determine the election outcome rather than political calculations.
