US Dollar Drops as AI Debt Sell-off Triggers Flight to Safety

The US dollar suffered its sharpest single-day decline in a month as investors sold off AI-related debt and moved into US Treasuries.

The US dollar experienced its sharpest single-day decline in over a month on Thursday, with the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index falling 0.3%. The currency dropped against nearly all major peers, including a 1% decline against the Swiss franc.

This slide occurred despite strong economic data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that US producer prices rose 1.3% in September, marking the highest increase in over four years, while retail sales exceeded forecasts. Market analysts attribute the currency's decline to a sell-off in artificial intelligence-related debt, which triggered a flight to safer assets like US Treasuries, subsequently lowering yields and pressuring the dollar.

Investors are now awaiting remarks from Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh at the International Monetary Fund-World Bank Group annual meetings in Bangkok. Markets are seeking signals on future interest-rate policy before the Federal Reserve System enters its blackout period on Saturday.
