Department of War Launches GenAI.mil Platform Powered by Google Gemini

The United States Department of War launched GenAI.mil on December 9, 2025, a generative AI platform providing approximately 3 million military, civilian, and contractor personnel with advanced digital tools. Powered by Google Cloud's Gemini for Government, the system is designed to streamline administrative workflows, such as summarizing policy handbooks and creating risk assessments, while assisting in operational tasks like analyzing video and imagery.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth described the initiative as a means to make the fighting force more lethal and framed AI as the future of American warfare. Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael characterized the rollout as a fulfillment of President Donald Trump's mandate to achieve global technological superiority and described AI as America's next Manifest Destiny. The platform is currently authorized for Impact Level 5 and Controlled Unclassified Information standards, though officials plan to eventually integrate classified data and models from other providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI.

Google stated that data inputted by the department will not be used to train its public models. The deployment follows a shift in corporate policy, as both Google and OpenAI recently removed previous bans on the military application of their AI services. To facilitate the transition to an AI-driven culture, the department will provide no-cost training to all employees.
