Mojtaba Khamenei Appoints Hardline Military Leaders to Rebuild Command

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei issued six decrees on August 10, 2026, appointing hardline veterans to top military and security posts. The reshuffle follows a period of improvised leadership after US-Israeli airstrikes killed several predecessors, including Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi and Major General Mohammad Pakpour, whom the Leader described as martyrs.

Key appointments include Major General Ahmad Vahidi as commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and Major General Ali Abdollahi as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. Hojjatoleslam Hossein Taeb was named head of the Basij Organization with a mandate to expand intelligence networks into local neighborhoods, while Mohsen Rezaie was appointed national security chief. The decrees also merged the General Staff with the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters.

These moves coincide with the release of a new photograph of Mojtaba Khamenei and a reported seven-hour meeting with President Masoud Pezeshkian, intended to signal that the leader is alive and governing after a period of public absence. While some analysts view the appointments as a shift toward offensive deterrence against the United States and President Donald Trump, others suggest the primary goal is to consolidate authority and rebuild a command structure depleted by war.
