Oil Prices Surge as Trump Weighs Strikes Against Iran
Global oil prices jumped over 4% following a tanker strike near Qatar and reports that President Donald Trump is considering military action against Iran.
Global oil prices surged on Thursday, with Brent crude rising approximately 4% to $104.14 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate reaching $91.84. The spike followed a tanker strike north of Qatar and reports that Donald Trump is considering military strikes against Iran before the November 3 midterm elections.
The White House has reportedly asked the Pentagon to develop options for these strikes to project strength ahead of the vote. This escalation coincides with increased attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi strikes on two Saudi airports that killed three people. Market volatility was further compounded by production cuts in the Gulf of Mexico as operators prepared for Hurricane Isaias.
In response to the price jump and renewed inflation fears, the International Energy Agency agreed to accelerate the release of oil stockpiles to stabilize fuel prices. Meanwhile, the Government of Saudi Arabia is working to formalize a shuttle system for oil supplies to the market. The geopolitical tension also impacted financial markets, causing S&P 500 futures to decline by 0.4% and triggering global stock market losses.
