Brazil Supreme Court Allows Flávio Bolsonaro to Visit Father
The Supreme Court of Brazil authorized Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to resume visits to his father, Jair Bolsonaro, ahead of the October 25 presidential runoff.
The Supreme Court of Brazil authorized Flávio Bolsonaro to resume visits to his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, on October 12. Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the ruling after the expiration of a 90-day suspension that began July 17, when the senator violated court restrictions by reading a letter from his father during a YouTube livestream.
Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest in Brasilia. While federal prosecutors supported the decision to allow visits, the court explicitly prohibited the meetings from being used for political or electoral purposes. The ruling also bars the former president from distributing statements via social media or third parties.
Flávio Bolsonaro, a Liberal Party candidate, led the first round of the presidential election with 47% of the vote. He is scheduled to face incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the runoff election on October 25. If elected, Flávio Bolsonaro intends to pardon his father and seek the removal of Justice de Moraes.
