Benjamin Netanyahu Blocks Bill to Repeal Oslo Accords

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the Israeli government to block a far-right bill seeking to cancel the Oslo Accords and ban a Palestinian state.

The Israeli government decided on May 10 not to advance a bill proposed by Knesset Deputy Speaker Limor Son Har-Melech and the Otzma Yehudit faction that sought to repeal the 1993 Oslo Accords. Acting under instructions from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Ministerial Committee for Legislation blocked the proposal, which would have formally rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state and allowed for the expansion of Israeli settlements into Areas A and B of the West Bank.

Son Har-Melech and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir argued that the accords were a national disaster that provided the infrastructure for terrorism and the October 7 massacre. They framed the legislation as a necessary step to restore Israeli sovereignty and security by annulling all agreements between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs noted that the bill required coordination and cooperation with the United States.
