Trump Administration Bars Reporter After Oval Office Confrontation
The Trump administration removed Independent correspondent Andrew Feinberg from a press pool following a hostile exchange in the Oval Office over fraud reporting.
The White House removed Andrew Feinberg, a correspondent for The Independent, from his role as the print pool reporter for a presidential trip to South Carolina. The decision followed an Oval Office encounter where President Donald Trump reacted hostily to Feinberg's questioning regarding the False Claims Act and a new administration tip line for reporting fraud.
During the exchange, Trump berated Feinberg, asking, "What is wrong with you? Are you a sick person?" and warning, "I don't know who the hell you are, but you better be careful." The hostility extended to social media, where Vice President JD Vance called Feinberg an "imbecile" and the White House rapid response account used a slur to describe the reporter.
The White House Correspondents' Association condemned the move as retaliation, arguing that an independent press requires reporters to challenge the president without fear of losing access. The administration defended the restriction, stating that journalists have no constitutional right to access private facilities like the Oval Office or Air Force One, and claiming that proximity matters less when publications "lie, fabricate, and ignore the truth."
