UK Bans Disposable Barbecues Amid Record Heat and Wildfires

The Government of the United Kingdom has issued a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues, both in-store and online, citing a significant risk to the public and the environment. The decision follows a period of record-breaking heat, with temperatures reaching 38.1C at Kew Gardens, and a flash drought affecting over 71% of England. Prime Minister Andy Burnham deployed the military to assist with the crisis and announced plans to commission firefighting planes to combat the surge in blazes.

Earlier in August, Andy Burnham chaired an emergency Cobra committee meeting to coordinate responses to the extreme weather. The government allocated £97 million to upgrade firefighting capabilities after the Fire Brigades Union characterized the situation as a national emergency. Firefighters responded to 966 wildfires across England and Wales this year, including devastating blazes in the West Midlands that required paramedic treatment for 54 people.

Pressure for the ban grew as local leaders in North Yorkshire and the National Fire Chiefs Council highlighted the danger of single-use grills. Recent fires in Wykeham Forest and Cannock Chase were linked to disposable barbecues, while a previous moorland fire destroyed 25 square kilometers of peat. While some supermarkets had voluntarily suspended sales, the national ban formalizes these restrictions. The UK Health Security Agency has extended amber heat health alerts across multiple regions as the country faces its hottest summer on record.
