Texas Attorney General Probes Children's Underwear for Toxic Chemicals
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating Fruit of the Loom and Hanes to determine if children's underwear contains harmful synthetic chemicals.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched an investigation on October 6 into Fruit of the Loom and Hanes to determine if toxic chemicals are used in the production of children's underwear. Paxton issued civil investigative demands to both companies, citing concerns that synthetic materials like polyester, rayon, and spandex may contain bisphenols, parabens, phthalates, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
These chemicals are associated with infertility, hormone disruption, and cancer. While Paxton has not accused the companies of wrongdoing, he stated the probe is necessary to ensure children's necessities are free from harmful substances. This action follows a similar investigation Paxton initiated in April regarding Lululemon Athletica activewear.
Gildan Activewear, the owner of Hanes, stated it will cooperate with the investigation and maintains strict manufacturing standards. Fruit of the Loom is owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
