Trump Weighs Renewed Military Action as Iran War Support Shifts

President Donald Trump is weighing a return to military action to finish the conflict with Iran after expressing dissatisfaction with Iranian diplomatic offers. While Trump unilaterally announced a ceasefire on April 8 and has repeatedly extended it, he recently rejected an Iranian proposal for a five-year halt on nuclear enrichment, demanding instead a 20-year pause.

Public opinion on the conflict remains divided. A Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll of 2,745 registered U.S. voters found that 74 percent believe the United States is winning the war. The survey indicated strong support for the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and military airstrikes within Iran, provided that Iran ceases supporting terror proxies and recognizes Israel's right to exist.

However, support has declined among specific demographics. Data from the Jewish People Policy Institute shows that backing among connected American Jews dropped from 68 percent at the start of the conflict to 60 percent following the April 8 ceasefire. Additionally, a GBAO Strategies poll for J Street indicated that approximately 60 percent of American Jewish voters opposed the war in March, revealing a sharp divide between strong conservatives and liberals.
