China Accuses Japan of Remilitarization at UN General Assembly

Sun Xiaobo, head of the Chinese delegation to the UN, accused Japan of threatening regional stability through remilitarization and nuclear weapons discussions.

During the General Debate of the UN General Assembly First Committee on October 8, Sun Xiaobo, Director General of the Arms Control Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, accused Japan of threatening regional peace and stability. Sun asserted that the Japanese government is accelerating remilitarization while denying its history of aggression and glorifying World War II war crimes.

Sun specifically denounced remarks by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi regarding the possession of nuclear weapons, calling such discussions a provocation of the international nonproliferation regime. He further criticized Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's proposal to remove the enemy state clause from the UN Charter, characterizing the move as a challenge to the post-war international order. Sun urged the international community to oppose Japan's military build-up and called on Tokyo to adhere to the Three Non-Nuclear Principles.

Beyond the accusations against Japan, Sun criticized the United States for pursuing absolute strategic superiority through nuclear-sharing arrangements. He also addressed the development of artificial intelligence in warfare, advocating for the avoidance of an AI arms race and stating that humans must remain the ultimate responsible actors in weapons systems.
